SHOW DESCRIPTION: The Birthday Party by Harold Pinter is a comedy of menace which centers on STANLEY, a long-term resident at MEG and PETEY’s boarding house, and the paranoia which engulfs him when two mysterious men, GOLDBERG and MCCANN, show up to spend the night. Despite his attempts to escape, Stanley finds himself the guest of honor at their impromptu title party, an unsettling combination of celebration and hellscape, joined by LULU, a local young woman. Our version of this play explores the boundaries of objectivity and the role of perspective in production, pairing traditional theatrical performance with improvisational music and interactive intermissions. We’ll do our conceptual work collaboratively, maintaining constant conversation between staff and cast and valuing every team member’s ideas. Please be advised this play’s themes include mental illness, violence, and implied sexual assault.

STANLEY (he/him/his) has spent the past year as the only guest at a boarding house. It’s unclear exactly where he lived before, or why he left, or how much of his life exists only in his delusion. He’s arrogant and aggressive, but he’s also deeply insecure and plagued by anxiety, forever secretly dreaming of his past life as a pianist. How much can the other party guests trust his confidence in the hypothesis that GOLDBERG and MCCANN are unsavory characters? Please be advised that this character struggles with mental illness, participates in stage combat, and is directly involved in a scene of implied sexual assault.

GOLDBERG (he/him/his) arrives at the boarding house with boundless swagger, immediately winning the locals’ trust and taking charge of their affairs for the day. His charisma is undercut by a sinister streak, which is often not visible until too late. While STANLEY might (or might not) be right about his malicious intentions, there’s also an unspoken connection between these two characters: Have they met before? Might they see the world in similar ways? Please be advised that this character participates in stage combat, is featured in a plotline involving implied sexual assault, and may be involved in scenes of somewhat intimate contact, depending on actors’ comfort levels.

MCCANN (he/him/his) is eager to learn the tricks of the mysterious trade from GOLDBERG, but sometimes his efforts are compromised by his erratic personality. He can be just as cruel as his counterpart, but has significantly less control over how he expresses that cruelty. For MCCANN, this boarding house mission has high stakes: It’s his chance to prove himself useful. Please be advised that this character participates in stage combat.

MEG (she/her/hers) is so ecstatic to finally have guests staying at her boarding house that she’s largely oblivious to the ominous signs which so concern STANLEY, whom she sees almost as a son. Susceptible to confidence and guile, MEG is completely won over by her new guests, probably because she’s a sucker for certainty. How much of her dottiness is real and how much of it is a reflection of STANLEY’s dismissive attitude toward her? Please be advised that this character may be involved in scenes of somewhat intimate contact, depending on actors’ comfort levels.

LULU (she/her/hers), a young woman who lives nearby, is simultaneously self-assured, attention-starved, and deeply naïve (though some of her naïvete may be a front). Her character is a combination of authentically independent femininity and projected tropes of female identity deeply ingrained in male characters’ psyches. Just as won over by GOLDBERG and MCCANN as MEG but more coy in her reaction to them, she is caught in the crossfire when the title party takes a turn for the worse. Please be advised that this character is directly involved in a scene of implied sexual assault and may be involved in scenes of somewhat intimate contact, depending on actors’ comfort levels.

PETEY (he/him/his) is MEG’s completely unconcerned husband, a mild-mannered deck chair attendant who refuses to let his obviously boring life screech to a grinding halt just because two guests have finally arrived at the boarding house. In a play full of contradictions and confusion, it never occurs to him that the world might be anything other than what it seems.
