The Birthday Party Callbacks

Thank you so much for auditioning for The Birthday Party. We were truly floored by the amount of talent we saw this week, and we’re honored that all of you were interested in joining our team. If we were not able to offer you a callback, we would still absolutely love to have you as part of this process, so please feel free to contact us at [email protected] if you would like to be part of our staff.

If you see your name below, we are thrilled to invite you to our callbacks today, Sunday, February 2! Our callbacks are in the Loeb Ex from 11:00am until 4:00pm; times for each character are specified below. If you have any conflicts with your callback time, please email [email protected] (Stephanie Kaiser, Stage Manager) immediately and we’ll be happy to work through them with you. Please arrive 5-10 minutes early to ensure we can stay on schedule and get everyone out of the Ex on time. Lunch will be provided for anyone whose callback time doesn’t leave them at least 45 minutes to go to a dining hall, and we’ll bring some more snacks, so if you have any dietary restrictions, feel free to email [email protected] (Chloe E.W. Levine, Director) before 10:00am :)

Unfortunately, in order to allow as many people as possible to make it to all their callbacks for other shows, we’ve had to create a schedule which requires some people to be called for extended periods of time, and requires others to leave and come back. We are so sorry about the inconvenience!! Please feel free to bring work, playing cards, etc., and please know that we wish we could have scheduled things differently.

You can find links to the materials you’ll be reading at callbacks below. We don’t expect you to memorize them or do any other work in preparation, but taking a few moments to look them over and give them some thought may be helpful to you. We’ll also give you time to prepare after you arrive. Definitely be sure to at least read the description(s) of the character(s) for which you’ve been called back, though. As an additional note, just because you’re called back for a specific role does not mean we’re not considering you for other roles! We’ve only seen each of you once so far, so these preliminary groupings are based on a first impression. If you have any other questions about callbacks, please contact [email protected].

The Birthday Party by Harold Pinter is a comedy of menace which centers on STANLEY, a long-term resident at MEG and PETEY’s boarding house, and the paranoia which engulfs him when two mysterious men, GOLDBERG and MCCANN, show up to spend the night. Despite his attempts to escape, Stanley finds himself the guest of honor at their impromptu title party, an unsettling combination of celebration and hellscape, joined by LULU, a local young woman. Our version of this play explores the boundaries of objectivity and the role of perspective in production, pairing traditional theatrical performance with improvisational music and interactive intermissions. We’ll do our conceptual work collaboratively, maintaining constant conversation between staff and cast and valuing every team member’s ideas. Please be advised this play’s themes include mental illness, violence, and implied sexual assault.

If this semester is going to be a party, then callbacks are the pre-game. Looking forward to seeing you there!
