OLIVER (he/him/his, 17) is the captain and history specialist of the Quiz Bowl team at Greyson High School, a public magnet school in New York City. Though he can at times be overly competitive and domineering, in part because he feels implicit pressure from his overachieving family, he cares deeply about the team’s success and does his best to do right by them. AMELIA (she/her/hers, 16) is the Greyson A team’s literature specialist and often jockeys with OLIVER for control of the team. An aspiring journalist, she approaches both
Quiz Bowl and reporting with ambition and passionate curiosity, but sometimes those qualities cloud her judgment. She and NICK are dating (when we meet them).

NICK (he/him/his, 17) is Greyson A’s science and popular culture specialist. On top of his academic and extracurricular activities, he works many hours per week at the diner
his parents own, which always seems to be in danger of closing. His love for family and friends runs deep, but sometimes it prevents him from being honest about his own needs. He and AMELIA are dating at the beginning of the show; however, as time goes on, he is forced to reckon with confusion about his feelings for her — and with the fact that he might view CALRISSIAN as more than a friend.

CAM (he/they, 16) is Greyson A’s arts and philosophy specialist, and a triple jumper on the school’s track and field team. Always the first to crack a joke, their attempts to make everyone like them are in part a product of subconscious fear: fear that their friends are actually way more talented than them, and will one day leave them in the dust. When the tension builds to a breaking point, they’re liable to snap.

THE LITERAL DEVIL (any pronouns, ageless) is an appropriately irreverent supernatural being who is workshopping their classic Faustian deal for the budding scholars of the 21st century, because they take their customer feedback surveys very seriously. They are an expert at
exploiting Greyson A’s insecurities, but they’re also on the market for new friends and mentees.

OCTAVIA (she/her/hers, 14) is the extremely passionate and earnest captain of Greyson’s B team. It’s generally assumed that she’ll take over the squad when Greyson A graduates at the end of next year, so she’s always looking to the Greyson A players for cues on how to succeed in the game (and in life).
